Managing Flash Crowds on the Internet
A flash crowd is a surge in traffic to a particular Web site that causes the site to be virtually unreachable. We present a theoretical model of flash crowd events and evaluate the performance of various multilevel caching techniques suitable for managing these events. Our results show that orders of magnitude savings can be achieved in client response times and server and network load during f...
متن کاملRouting Diverse Crowds in Emergency with Dynamic Grouping.dvi
Evacuee routing algorithms in emergency typically adopt one single criterion to compute desired paths and ignore the specific requirements of users caused by different physical strength, mobility and level of resistance to hazard. In this paper, we present a quality of service (QoS) driven multi-path routing algorithm to provide diverse paths for different categories of evacuees. This algorithm...
متن کاملSheppard's correction for grouping in Cox's proportional hazards model
Cox's proportional hazards model is often t to grouped survival data, i.e. occurrence/exposure data over given time intervals and covariate strata. We derive a Sheppard correction for the bias in the grouped data analogue of Cox's maximum partial likelihood estimator. This is done via a large sample theory in which the covariate strata and time intervals shrink as the sample size increases.
متن کاملFlash Crowds Alleviation via Dynamic Adaptive Network
Given the increase in frequency and overall unpredictability, flash crowds have been the bane on internet website. This paper introduces FCAN, a flexibly adaptive network built on cache proxy server layer, transiting architecture between C/S and P2P mode according to the real-time network traffics, as a possible approach to address the flash crowds. The paper concludes the characteristics of fl...
متن کاملOrganising Computation through Dynamic Grouping
There are a range of abstractions used for both modelling and programming of modern computational systems. While these abstractions may have been devised for specific purposes, the variety of options is often confusing, with development and programming techniques often being distinct. The aim of this chapter is two-fold. First, we bring together a number of these abstractions into one, general,...
